FAQ

How long does fence installation take from start to finish?

Residential fence installation typically takes 1/2 a day –3 days from site preparation and post pounding to panel/wire hanging and cleanup.  At Cyclone Fence, we have very efficient, highly trained crews that not only deliver excellent quality, but work at a great pace too.

Do I need a permit to install a residential fence?

Most municipalities require a fence permit before installation, especially if you exceed 6 feet in height or install on a property line. Permit costs vary but typically range from $50–$200, and turnaround times can be 1–4 weeks. Always check with your local building department for setbacks, easements, height restrictions, and material regulations.

If you are located in Hudson, New Richmond, Woodbury, or Stillwater, you can find a list of fence regulations on our website to have a fence in your city. We also have a link to get a permit for most cities that require them.

Which fence material is most durable: vinyl, wood, or chain link?

Vinyl fences top the list in durability, featuring UV-inhibited resin that resists fading, cracking, and warping for 25–30+ years. Chain link offers excellent strength and security, especially when powder-coated to prevent rust in harsh climates, lasting 30+ years. Wood fences typically last 25+ years with our steel post masters and proper care. Our reinforced posts and galvanized hardware can further extend our material’s lifespan.

What height restrictions apply to backyard fences?

Backyard fences are generally limited to 6 feet tall, with exact limits set by local zoning codes. Front-yard fences often max out at 3–4 feet to maintain neighborhood sightlines and aesthetic standards. Many jurisdictions also enforce some setback rules, requiring installation a few inches inside your property line.

What is the expected lifespan of different fence types?

A well-maintained wood fence can last 25+ years, while galvanized chain link endures 30+ years in most climates. Vinyl fences, thanks to UV stabilization and impact resistance, often exceed 25–30 years without structural issues. Soil conditions, such as high moisture or rocky substrates, can shorten lifespans by 3–5 years, so choosing a post depth of 4' deep is critical. Prompt repairs will maximize any fence’s longevity.

How can a new fence increase my property value?

A quality fence boosts curb appeal, defines outdoor living spaces, and enhances privacy and security—all key selling points for homebuyers. Studies show a well-installed fence can recoup 80–90% of its cost at resale, particularly in family-oriented or pet-friendly neighborhoods. Matching your fence style to your home’s architecture creates a cohesive aesthetic that appraisers and buyers recognize as higher value.

However, a poorly installed fence can actually decrease your homes value. That is because it costs money to get a fence removed. The cost of removal can be even greater if the fence footings need to be removed. That is why it is so important to worry about who is installing your fence, and what it will look like after 20+ years.

When comparing two houses for sale, a well-built, long-lasting fence can significantly influence a buyer’s decision, especially families with children, pet owners, or anyone who values privacy. In contrast, a home lacking a fence or featuring a poorly constructed one often appears less attractive and secure. By investing in a durable, high-quality fence, homeowners not only boost curb appeal but also increase their property’s value and desirability in today’s competitive real estate market.

How much maintenance does a vinyl fence require each year?

Vinyl fences need almost zero annual maintenance—just a quick soap-and-water rinse to remove dirt, pollen, or algae. Inspect post caps and rails for any shifting after freeze-thaw cycles, and ensure fasteners remain snug. If mold appears in shady areas, use a diluted bleach solution and a soft brush. Avoid sharp impacts that could crack panels and address any damage promptly. If you get any tire marks on your fence that aren't coming off, lacquer thinner will take it right off.

Can a fence reduce noise pollution?

Yes—solid privacy fences, especially those made of vinyl or wood with no gaps, can significantly dampen street and neighbor noise. Adding a mass-loaded vinyl barrier or planting a dense hedge on the fence line further improves sound blocking. Properly installed, a noise-reduction fence can lower decibel levels by 5–10 dB, creating a noticeably quieter backyard retreat.

How do I choose the right fence style for my home?

Selecting a fence style involves balancing privacy needs, aesthetic preferences, and budget constraints. Traditional picket fences suit classic homes, while board-on-board or horizontal slat designs complement modern architecture. Evaluate your landscaping, local HOA rules, and desired maintenance level to pick a style that enhances curb appeal and long-term value.
